Kia is part of Hyundai Motor Group and shares almost every key platform decision with Hyundai. Sportage, Sorento, Telluride, Forte, K5, and Soul are everywhere on the First Coast, and the Kia EV6 has become one of the more interesting EV jobs we do. Like Hyundai, Kia was at the center of the well-publicized 2011–2021 theft trend (vehicles without immobilizers), and the brand responded with a 2023 software upgrade. The most useful thing to know about Kia keys: bring the title or registration to all-keys-lost jobs. Kia's security session requires VIN-level proof of ownership and we cannot complete programming without it.
Pre-2010
Pre-2010 Kias use the original Kia immobilizer with a basic transponder key. Cheap and fast to replace.
2010 – 2017
2010–2017 Kias introduced Smart Key as standard on Limited and SX trims. The 2011–2017 Optima and Forte are the models most affected by the well-publicized theft trend.
2018 – Now
2018-and-newer Kias use Smart Key as standard and the latest revision of the Hyundai-Kia immobilizer. Telluride, K5, EV6, and the redesigned Sportage all share the same underlying platform with model-specific FCC IDs.
Known issues we see
The 2011–2021 Kia theft trend affected models without immobilizers (most non-push-button-start cars). If your Kia is in this range and was attempted, we install factory-equivalent security upgrade keys.

Kia key FAQ
Is my Kia affected by the theft trend?+
Most 2011–2021 Kias with a turn-key ignition were affected. Push-button start models have the immobilizer and are not affected.
How much does a Kia smart key cost?+
Smart key spare starts at $149 cut and programmed on-site. All-keys-lost starts at $199.
Can you program an EV6 key on-site?+
Yes. Kia EV6 uses the E-GMP platform fob — same underlying platform as Hyundai Ioniq 5. Plan on a 5-minute additional 'wake' step on the high-voltage system.
Ready to book your Kia key?
Quote on the phone is the price you pay on-site. No bait-and-switch.
