The first question when arranging a car key is practical: do you have a usable key that starts the vehicle? Having one often gives you different service options from having none. Tell the provider what your remaining key actually does, rather than selecting the lowest advertised key price.
Match the service to your situation
| Your situation | What to request |
|---|---|
| One key starts the vehicle reliably; you want another | Spare car key or duplication |
| Every usable starting key is missing | All-keys-lost replacement assessment |
| The working key is visible inside a locked car | Vehicle entry, with a separate spare-key quote if wanted |
| You still have the fob, but its buttons or starting function fail | Key fob assessment; describe the symptoms |
A worn blade, damaged fob or intermittent starting problem belongs in the initial conversation. If the vehicle will not start with any available key, say so. A starting fault does not by itself identify the key as the cause.
Cutting and programming do different jobs
Cutting prepares the mechanical blade for the lock. Electronic authorization is separate on vehicles equipped with an immobilizer. A blade that turns a door lock is therefore not proof that it can start the engine.
For example, Honda's owner documentation explains that its immobilizer requires a correctly coded key to start the engine. That illustrates the distinction; it does not establish a programming procedure for every vehicle.
Ask what the quote includes: a starting key, remote buttons, a proximity fob and an emergency blade are different functions. Support depends on the actual vehicle and part. Ford's parts catalogue recommends a VIN-based search for the most accurate parts match. Matching the outside shape of two fobs is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Why the quote changes when no key remains
With a working key present, the provider can assess an additional-key service. With none, they must confirm a supported replacement procedure, access to the vehicle and any additional security requirements. The steps vary; losing every key does not automatically mean every vehicle needs the same module reset or the same amount of work.
Koala's general published estimates are:
- Spare/additional car key: $149–$280.
- All-keys-lost replacement: $199–$390.
These are preliminary references. Select the exact vehicle in the car key calculator, then confirm availability and the complete quote. Some vehicles or key systems require dealer service. For a broader comparison of cost factors, read our car key replacement cost guide.
Ask whether the total covers compatible hardware, blade cutting, programming, agreed function tests, vehicle entry if needed, and any travel, time-based charges or applicable tax. If you want two new keys, request the total for two rather than assuming a fixed discount.
Prepare for the appointment
Have these details ready when requesting an estimate:
- Vehicle: make, model, year, trim if known, and whether you insert a key or press a start button. Share the VIN privately when requested.
- Remaining keys: how many you have, which ones start the car, and any damage. Bring all existing keys; confirm which must be present.
- Authorization: photo ID and proof of ownership or permission to request service. For a rental, company or borrowed vehicle, confirm the required approval first.
- Access: the exact Jacksonville-area location, parking instructions and whether the vehicle can be reached safely. Mention documents locked inside.
- Scope: which functions you want, the complete price and what happens if inspection identifies a different problem.
Before the appointment ends, check the agreed starting and remote functions and confirm that retained keys still work. If a key was stolen, ask what supported steps can address the missing key and what limitations remain; making a new key alone does not answer that security question.
Koala provides mobile service 7 AM – 10 PM, every day. Request an estimate with your vehicle details and key situation. For a planned backup while your current key works, start with car key duplication.
