If a child is alone in a locked vehicle, call 911 immediately. NHTSA's heatstroke guidance says to act immediately; shade and partly open windows do not make a parked car safe. Follow the emergency dispatcher's instructions. Do not spend that time comparing locksmith quotes.
For a routine lockout with nobody in danger, the useful next step is to establish what happened and what help you need.
1. Confirm whether this is a lockout or a key problem
- The key is inside the locked vehicle: request car lockout service. Say whether it is in the passenger compartment or trunk.
- The key is missing and you have no spare: request car key replacement. Opening the door alone will not let you drive away.
- The fob is with you but does not respond: describe what works and what does not. A battery, fob or vehicle issue may need assessment; see key fob replacement and programming.
If it is safe, check whether another door is already unlocked. Consider whether someone can bring an accessible spare. If you already have an authorized manufacturer app with working remote access, check that option. Availability depends on the vehicle, account setup and connectivity; do not assume a newly installed app can unlock it.
Avoid forcing a window or inserting household tools into the door. Describe the situation to a service provider instead of turning a lockout into additional repair work.
2. Give a location someone can actually find
Move to a safe waiting place away from moving traffic. Share the car's exact location and tell the provider where you will wait. A large destination name may not identify the correct entrance or parking area.
For a Jacksonville appointment, useful details could include:
- A downtown garage's name, level, space number and access restrictions.
- The specific parking section and nearby entrance at St. Johns Town Center.
- The named parking lot and row at Jacksonville International Airport.
- A beach parking lot's address or nearest intersection.
These are examples of location details to provide, not assurances of access to a particular property. Mention gates, parking fees or height restrictions and ask property staff about any access permissions. Give the vehicle's make, model, year, color and a callback number.
3. Check roadside coverage before arranging a second service
Look at an existing roadside membership, insurance policy or manufacturer assistance plan. Contact that provider and ask whether vehicle entry is covered, whether it must dispatch the technician, and what approval is needed if you arrange your own locksmith.
For example, AAA Auto Club Group's reimbursement guidance says reimbursement for independently arranged roadside service can be limited to its contracted rate. It also requires a paid receipt and sets a submission deadline. Your own plan determines the applicable benefit; reimbursement is not automatic.
Ask separately about replacement keys, towing, payment limits and receipts. A benefit for unlocking a door does not necessarily cover cutting and programming a new key. If help is already dispatched, coordinate any change with that provider before booking another visit.
4. Confirm authorization, scope and price
Have photo ID and proof of ownership or authorization ready. If they are inside, say so when calling. With a rental, fleet or borrowed vehicle, check who may authorize access and whether the owner requires its own assistance provider.
Koala's published standard car lockout estimate is $65–$120. Confirm the actual vehicle, location, proposed work and complete price, including any travel or time-based charges, before service starts. Key cutting or programming is a separate service.
Ask for the business name, an arrival estimate and an explanation of anything that could change the preliminary quote. Keep the agreed details and itemized receipt. Our guide to avoiding locksmith scams covers common warning signs when choosing a provider.
Request the right help
Koala's mobile-service hours are 7 AM – 10 PM, every day. Use car lockout service for keys locked inside, or emergency locksmith services to identify the appropriate service and check current availability. Arrival depends on the location and schedule; confirm it before dispatch.
Once access is restored, consider keeping a spare car key separate from your everyday key. A spare inside the same locked car cannot help with the next lockout.
