About the comparison: Dealer figures on this page are calculated from our pricing model, not verified local dealer quotes. The model uses multiples of our starting price; range mode also adjusts those reference figures. Ask a dealer for a written quote for the same vehicle and service, and compare any transport or appointment charges separately.
The S40 was Volvo's answer to "we want a Volvo but we can't afford a Volvo," and it worked. A lot of these cars ended up as first cars, hand-me-downs, or the reliable beater someone's kid drives to UNF. So when the key goes missing, the last thing anyone wants is a dealer bill that costs more than the car's blue book value. Good news: it doesn't have to.
We work on S40s all over Jacksonville, from driveways in Mandarin to apartment lots near the Beaches. Here is what you can expect to pay, broken down by the two generations that matter.
Two Key Systems, Two Price Bands
Volvo changed the S40's key hardware partway through its US run, and the year your car was built determines both the type of key and the cost to replace it.
2000-2006: The Fixed Blade Transponder Key
Early S40s use a solid, one-piece key with an HU56 or NE66 style blade. Inside the plastic head sits a Megamos-family transponder chip that talks to the car's immobilizer. No fob, no buttons, just a metal blade and a chip. Simple system, and that simplicity keeps the repair affordable.
- Add or spare key: $450–$585 with us. Dealer pricing lands around $990-$1485 for the same key.
- All keys lost: $850–$1,105 with us. Dealer pricing runs roughly $1870-$2805.
2007-2011: The Five-Button Flip Key
Later S40s (this style actually started showing up around 2004 and fully took over by 2007) switched to a flip key, Volvo part number 31253386 and similar variants. The blade folds into the fob body, and you get remote lock, unlock, and panic buttons built in.
- Add or spare key: $350–$455 with us. Dealer pricing is typically $770-$1155.
- All keys lost: $720–$940 with us. Dealer pricing runs about $1585-$2380.
Notice the later cars are actually cheaper across the board, not more expensive. That surprises people. The flip key platform is more common and better supported by locksmith programming tools than you would expect from something with more buttons.
Price Table: Koala vs. Dealer
S40 dealer prices in the table are estimates, not a Koala invoice. The calculator puts that gap at about 2.2 to 3.3 times the low end of the published Koala range. Confirm the dealer number yourself.
| Model Years | Job | Our Price | Dealer Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000-2006 | Add/spare key | $450–$585 | $990-$1485 |
| 2000-2006 | All keys lost | $850–$1,105 | $1870-$2805 |
| 2007-2011 | Add/spare key | $350–$455 | $770-$1155 |
| 2007-2011 | All keys lost | $720–$940 | $1585-$2380 |
Every price above includes the key itself, cutting, and on-site programming. There is no separate diagnostic fee and no tow.
Why the Dealer Number Is So Much Higher
Dealer service departments price key work as a bundled job: the key or fob, a locksmith or technician's shop hours, and often a tow if you have no working key to drive in with. In Jacksonville, a tow alone can run $75-$150 before anyone has even looked at your ignition. Stack that on top of parts and labor and the total climbs fast.
We skip the tow entirely. A technician drives to you with the equipment already loaded, cuts the blade on-site, and programs the transponder or fob to your specific vehicle right there in the parking lot or driveway. Most jobs wrap up in under an hour.
What Drives the Price Within Each Band
A few things push a job toward the higher or lower end of "add key" versus "all keys lost":
- Working key present or not. If you still have one key, even a beat-up one, programming a second is faster and cheaper. Lose them all and the immobilizer requires a different procedure through the OBD port, which adds time and cost.
- Blade cutting complexity. The HU56/NE66 blades on early cars are straightforward. Flip key blades on later cars are similar in difficulty, just a different cut pattern.
- Aftermarket vs. OEM fob housing. We default to reliable parts that keep the price where it is quoted above. If you specifically want an OEM Volvo-branded fob shell, that can add a bit to the flip key jobs.
If you are weighing whether to fix a stuck ignition cylinder instead of, or in addition to, a key, our ignition repair page covers that side of things separately, since ignition wear is common on cars from this era once they cross 150,000 miles.
A Note for Students and First-Car Owners
We see a lot of S40s registered to college kids and first-time drivers around Riverside and San Marco, cars bought used and handed down without a spare key ever getting cut. If that is your situation, do yourself a favor: get the spare made now, while you still have the original. It is the $450–$585 or $350–$455 job, not the $850–$1,105 or $720–$940 one. Waiting until the original snaps in the ignition or goes missing on a Friday night is how a manageable expense turns into an emergency one.
Parents buying an S40 as a first car for a teenager should think about this the same way they think about insurance. One spare key, cut and programmed at purchase, costs less than a single tow plus a locksmith call six months later. It also means a lost key on move-in day at a dorm near the Southside or a shift change at a Beaches restaurant job does not turn into a missed class or a missed paycheck.
How Long Does the Job Actually Take
Most spare key appointments on an S40 wrap up in 30 to 45 minutes once the technician arrives. Cutting the blade takes a few minutes on either key style, and programming the transponder or flip key fob to the immobilizer is a quick procedure on both generations of this platform. All keys lost jobs run longer, often 45 to 75 minutes, because the technician has to connect through the OBD port and walk the immobilizer through a full relearn instead of just adding a key to an existing set.
Weather and parking are the only real variables. A flat driveway in Mandarin or a shaded spot in an Orange Park lot is easy. A tight downtown parking garage adds a few minutes of setup, nothing more.
What to Have Ready Before We Arrive
A little prep speeds things along and can shave time off the final bill in edge cases:
- Your VIN, found on the driver-side dash through the windshield or on your registration. This confirms which key generation your specific S40 uses, especially useful for 2006-2007 transition cars.
- Proof of ownership, such as your registration or insurance card. This is standard practice for any all-keys-lost job, on any make.
- A general idea of your key history. If the car came to you already missing a spare, or if a previous owner mentioned a "chip key" versus a "clicker," that detail helps the technician arrive with the right hardware the first time.
None of this is mandatory to book an appointment, but it does mean less time standing in a parking lot waiting on a phone call to confirm details.
Getting an Estimate for Your S40
The price ranges above cover the vast majority of S40s on the road, but VIN-specific details occasionally shift a quote slightly, especially on transition-year cars built in 2006 or early 2007 that could carry either key system. Request a free preliminary estimate through our quote page, or call with your VIN or plate, location, and preferred timing. Any travel or time-based charges are disclosed before dispatch, and you approve the complete price before work begins.

Practical notes
Can you program a Volvo S40 key without towing the car to a dealer? Yes. We program S40 keys on-site using professional locksmith equipment, whether you have a working key already or lost every key you own. There is no need to tow the car anywhere. We come to your driveway, your workplace, or wherever the car is sitting in Jacksonville.
I only have one S40 key left. Should I get a spare cut now? We would recommend it, and most owners in this position agree once they hear the numbers. Cutting a spare while you still have a working key is faster and cheaper than an all-keys-lost job later, and it means a lost or broken key never leaves you stranded. Students and first-car owners especially benefit from having a backup made early.
