Volvo S60 Key Replacement Cost in Jacksonville: All Three Generations
The S60 has been in Volvo's lineup since 2001, and it is still selling today. That is an unusually long run for a sedan, and it means we get called out to three distinct versions of this car: an early blade key, a mid-2000s flip fob, and a modern smart key. If you tell us the model year, we already know which key we are cutting before we pull into your driveway in Riverside or San Marco.
Below is what each generation actually costs, side by side with dealer pricing, so you know what a fair number looks like before anyone quotes you.
2001–2006: The Blade-and-Transponder Years
The first-generation S60 used a standard HU56/NE66 style blade with a Megamos-family transponder chip embedded in the head. It looks like an ordinary metal key, but the chip inside talks to the immobilizer the moment you turn the ignition. No chip match, no start, even if the blade turns fine.
These cars are twenty-plus years old now, which means we see a mix of owners: some are daily-driving a well-kept 2004, others inherited one from a parent and just found out the spare key vanished years ago.
- Add or spare key: $440 with us. Dealer pricing typically runs $880 to $1,320 for the same part and programming.
- All keys lost: starts at $840 with us. Dealer quotes for a full lockout on this generation usually land between $1,680 and $2,520.
Parts availability is the wildcard here. We stock blades and chips for this era, but if your specific cut pattern is unusual we may need a day to source it. We will tell you upfront, not after we have already been to your house once.
2007–2014: The Flip Key Era
This is the generation most Jacksonville drivers picture when they think "Volvo key." Around 2007, Volvo switched the S60 to a five-button flip key, part numbers like 31253386 and its variants, where the blade folds into the fob body and pops out with a button on the side. It was a step up in convenience and it is genuinely the cheapest generation to replace, both in parts and labor.
Interestingly, this is also the era we get the fewest emergency calls for. Owners tend to hold onto these fobs a long time. But when a key does go missing, whether it slid under a car seat and stayed there through three trade-ins or genuinely walked off at the Beaches, the fix is quick.
- Add or spare key: $355 with us. Dealer pricing runs $710 to $1,065.
- All keys lost: starts at $730 with us. Dealer quotes range $1,460 to $2,190.
Programming a flip key takes less time on our end than either of the other two generations, which is part of why the price sits lower. Fewer steps, less risk, faster job.
2015–2027: The Smart Key Generation
Starting with the 2015 redesign and continuing through the current model, the S60 moved to a push-button smart key, the KR55WK49264 style proximity fob and its later updates. Keep it in your pocket, walk up, pull the handle, push the start button. It is the setup most new Volvo buyers expect now, and it is also the setup that generates the most panic when it disappears, because there is no visible blade to fall back on for entry.
Cars from 2016 forward do include a small HU101-style emergency blade tucked inside the fob for manual door entry, but that blade alone will not start the car. You still need the fob paired to the vehicle's electronics.
- Add or spare key: $455 with us. Dealer pricing typically runs $910 to $1,365.
- All keys lost: starts at $810 with us. Dealer quotes for this scenario run $1,620 to $2,430.
We program these on-site using the same equipment we bring to every call. No tow to the dealer, no rental car while you wait for an appointment slot two weeks out.
Side-by-Side Price Comparison
| Generation | Years | Add/Spare Key (Us) | Add/Spare Key (Dealer) | All Keys Lost (Us) | All Keys Lost (Dealer) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blade & transponder | 2001–2006 | $440 | $880–$1,320 | from $840 | $1,680–$2,520 |
| Flip key | 2007–2014 | $355 | $710–$1,065 | from $730 | $1,460–$2,190 |
| Smart key | 2015–2027 | $455 | $910–$1,365 | from $810 | $1,620–$2,430 |
Notice the flip-key era sits below the other two on both ends. Older blade keys need chip sourcing and more careful cutting; newer smart keys need the full programming handshake. The middle generation just needs less of both.
Why the Dealer Number Is So Much Higher
Part of it is straightforward parts markup. Part of it is that a dealership visit for a lost key almost always means a tow first, since there is no other way to get a keyless S60 to their lot. Add diagnostic time, shop labor rates, and a wait that can stretch past same-day, and the gap between our number and theirs grows fast.
We come to you instead. Orange Park driveway, office lot in Arlington, wherever the car actually is. Most jobs, regardless of generation, wrap up in under 90 minutes.
One Thing Worth Doing While We're There
If you only have one working key on any S60 generation, cutting a second one during the same visit is meaningfully cheaper than calling us back later. The programming setup cost is already paid for on visit one. Adding a second key to that same session usually just means a few extra minutes and the part itself.
This matters more on the older 2001–2006 cars, where sourcing a second blade separately can mean a short delay. Get it done once.
