Why BMW Key Replacement Is More Complex Than Most Cars
BMW uses several families of electronic key and start-authorization systems. A mechanically correct blade alone does not authorize an immobilizer-equipped vehicle to start.
The names EWS, CAS, FEM and BDC describe different systems and control modules. They do not form one universal timeline for every BMW model:

Blade Keys with a Transponder
A blade key can contain a transponder in its head for electronic start authorization. Some versions also have remote-locking buttons and a battery. The blade shape or presence of buttons does not identify the immobilizer version.

Remote Fobs and Comfort Access
BMW remote fobs can provide different access and starting functions. Comfort Access is an equipment feature that allows passive access where fitted. A start button or remote-locking buttons alone do not prove that the vehicle has Comfort Access.

A generic listing does not establish that the key is authorized for your particular vehicle. Waiting Until You Have Zero Keys
If you have a working BMW key, the available spare-key procedure can differ from an all-keys-lost job. With zero keys, supported vehicles require additional security-system work.
