# Locksmith vs Dealer: Which Saves You More on Car Keys in 2026

Compare mobile locksmith and dealer key replacement, using current vehicle estimates and clear service-availability checks.

Quick answer

For the 2016 Honda Civic calculator example, a spare key is $175–$230 and all-keys-lost service is $225–$295; other years and key types need their own estimate. A mobile locksmith can reduce key replacement costs and avoid towing on supported vehicles. Compare the same model, year, key type, and spare-key or all-keys-lost service. Koala does not service Mercedes-Benz 2014+; Koala's service policy excludes all-keys-lost jobs for BMW/Mini model year 2022+ and some Audi/Porsche vehicles; contact the dealer for those cases.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a locksmith always cheaper than the dealer for car keys?**

Often, but it depends on the exact vehicle and job. Compare our current model/year estimate with an actual dealer quote, including towing where needed. Some services are unavailable through Koala, including Mercedes-Benz 2014+ and selected BMW, Audi, and Porsche all-keys-lost jobs.

**Why are dealer car keys so expensive?**

A dealer quote can include an original key, ordering, cutting, programming, diagnosis and labor. If all keys are lost, ask whether the vehicle must be transported to the dealer. Compare the complete scope with the locksmith quote rather than comparing one advertised number.

**Will the locksmith key be the same quality as the dealer key?**

That depends on the supplied part. An original, new aftermarket, refurbished or shell-only product can differ in construction, condition, buttons and warranty. Ask for the exact part type and confirm that all promised functions work before approving the job.

Complete technical walkthrough & pricing breakdown (6 min read)

Dealer and mobile-locksmith quotes can cover different parts and services. A useful comparison matches the exact vehicle, key type, part condition, spare-key or all-keys-lost situation, travel, towing and warranty. This guide explains what to ask each provider before choosing.

## Where dealer pricing actually comes from

The dealer's total can include several items:

1. **The key blank or fob** — ask for the part number, condition and included functions.
2. **Cutting and electronic authorization** — the required work depends on the vehicle and whether a working key remains.
3. **Diagnosis and labor** — ask which work is included and whether the estimate can change after inspection.
4. **Transport** — for an all-keys-lost job, confirm whether the dealer needs the vehicle on site.

Get a written dealer quote for the complete job. If transport is required, obtain that price separately so the comparison uses the same scope.

## Where mobile locksmith pricing comes from

A mobile locksmith performs a supported job at the vehicle. The quote may include:

- The identified key or remote and its stated condition
- Cutting and the supported electronic work
- Travel or time-based charges disclosed before dispatch
- Diagnosis where the symptoms may not be caused by the key

A mobile visit can avoid towing when the job is supported. It does not guarantee that every vehicle, key or all-keys-lost situation can be handled on site. For a remote or push-button-start key, our [key fob replacement service](https://koala-locksmith.com/key-fob-replacement) explains what we check before quoting the part and programming.

## Side-by-side: current vehicle price references

The links below show current model estimates. Select the exact year and whether you need a spare or all-keys-lost service in our [vehicle calculator](https://koala-locksmith.com/cars). Dealer ranges in the calculator are comparison estimates; confirm the dealer's own quote.

| Vehicle | Key configuration | Dealer reference | Koala reference | Comparison |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Honda Civic | Confirm exact year, trim and ignition | Confirm exact year | [Civic estimate](https://koala-locksmith.com/cars/honda/civic) | Compare same job |
| Toyota Camry | Confirm exact year, trim and ignition | Confirm exact year | [Camry estimate](https://koala-locksmith.com/cars/toyota/camry) | Compare same job |
| Ford F-150 | Confirm exact year, trim and ignition | Confirm exact year | [F-150 estimate](https://koala-locksmith.com/cars/ford/f-150) | Compare same job |
| Chevrolet Silverado | Confirm exact year, trim and ignition | Confirm exact year | [Silverado estimate](https://koala-locksmith.com/cars/chevrolet/silverado) | Compare same job |

| Mercedes C-Class pre-2014 service category | Confirm exact vehicle | See model comparison | [C-Class estimate](https://koala-locksmith.com/cars/mercedes-benz/c-class) | $285–$375 |
| Mercedes C-Class 2014+ | Confirm exact vehicle | Contact dealer | Service not offered | — |

A few patterns are worth pointing out:

- Compare a spare key with a spare key, and all-keys-lost service with the same job at the dealer.
- Check the exact vehicle and service. BMW/Mini model year 2022+ is a Koala service-policy category, not an identification of the installed immobilizer.
- Koala does not provide Mercedes-Benz 2014+ service, BMW/Mini model year 2022+ all-keys-lost service, Audi 2022+ all-keys-lost service, or Porsche 2020+ all-keys-lost service. Audi A4/A5/Q7/SQ7/TT from 2018 also exclude all-keys-lost service.

## When the dealer is actually the right choice

We are not going to pretend a locksmith is always the best answer. Here is when going to the dealer makes sense:

- **An unsupported service in our calculator** — including Mercedes-Benz 2014+ and the BMW/Audi/Porsche all-keys-lost exclusions above. Ferrari is quoted individually after checking the vehicle.
- **Recall or warranty-related work** — ask the manufacturer or dealer whether the specific repair is covered.
- **Key under active warranty** through your purchase agreement.

For other vehicles, compare availability, timing, part condition, warranty and the complete price for the same job.

## What you should never pay for

Watch for these quote problems, whether the provider is a dealer or a locksmith:

- **An undisclosed trip or time-based charge.** Ask for these before dispatch.
- **An unclear part description.** Ask whether the key is original, new aftermarket, refurbished, used or only a replacement shell.
- **An unexplained all-keys-lost difference.** It is a different service; ask what additional work is included.
- **A final scope that differs from the preliminary estimate.** The provider should explain the change and obtain approval before continuing.

## How long the locksmith process takes

For a supported vehicle, the visit generally includes:

1. **Verification** — confirm year/make/model and that you own the vehicle (we ask for ID and registration; this is industry standard for security reasons).
2. **Identify and prepare the compatible key** — the exact part and any blade depend on the vehicle.
3. **Complete the supported electronic work** — requirements vary by system and whether a working key remains.
4. **Test** — start the vehicle, verify all buttons work, confirm trunk and panic button function.

Timing depends on identification, parts, diagnosis and the required work. Ask for an estimate after the exact vehicle and key situation are confirmed.

## Why this matters in Jacksonville specifically

Jacksonville service distances and traffic vary considerably. For a supported mobile job, bringing the service to the vehicle can avoid transport to a shop. Confirm the exact service address, travel charges and dispatch ETA before booking.

Arrival time depends on technician location, traffic and current availability.

## Details that change the quote

**Do I have to bring my car somewhere or do you come to me?** Koala is mobile and comes to the vehicle for supported jobs. Service availability and timing depend on the exact vehicle, key situation, parts, location and current schedule. We confirm support and a dispatch ETA before booking.

**What information do I need to give to get a quote?** Provide the year, make, model, whether any working key remains, and the visible features or labels on the existing key. The VIN, build date, trim or ignition type may be needed to identify the compatible part. A phone or online quote is preliminary until the exact vehicle and job scope are confirmed.
